In December last year, the US authorities doubled the application fee for H1B visa to $4,000. With this visa being highly popular among the Indian IT professionals, the hike in fee was said to be discriminatory against Indian IT firms with a number of negative effects in store. This is expected to dent the Indian IT industry by $400 million.
But as per the Minister-Counsellor for Consular Affairs at the US Embassy, Joseph M Pomper, this hike would have a minimal impact and the applications for the H1B visa would continue pouring in from India. He said that about 70% H1B visas are given to Indians and this should only be considered as a cost of doing business.
